Scottish punk legend Fay Fife (Rezillos) with her new band The Countess of Fife.
The insurgent alt country outfit led by Fay Fife (best known as the dynamic front woman, founder and creative force of classic Scottish punk bands The Rezillos/The Revillos).
Think of the Cramps meeting Johnny Cash in an unholy alchemy of country, punk, rock and gospel. Fay’s glorious vocals – rich, dark and powerful – combine with Allan (So You Think You’re A Cowboy) Mcdowall’s singing guitars and harmony vocals to create a perfect storm to play with your emotions, working with some of the finest Scottish musicians around.
Star Of The Sea is the long anticipated debut studio album is co-produced by Fay and award winning producer (and composer/musician) Jim Sutherland (whose many projects and credits include Eliza Carthy’s Big Machine, La Banda Europa and rapper Loki). Musicians include Willie Molleson, Chris Agnew, Chris Stout and Dave Milligan, with Kirsten Adamson (daughter of Big Country’s Stuart Adamson) on backing vocals, and Sutherland on percussion.
The songs are mostly written by Fay, and in combination with Allan Mcdowall, with the brooding Humans Are A Bad Breed written by Fife and Mcdowall, with guest writer Martin Metcalfe of Goodbye Mr Mackenzie. From the out and out country feel of Second Fiddle to rockers Goodbye Motorbike Guy and Humans Are A Bad Breed, and the more vulnerable and reflective Trapped and Let This Night Be Over, this album is a “must listen” which shows many unexpected sides and shades to Fay Fife.
Fay has earned her place in Scottish rock music history as an exciting, unrestrained live performer, with chart hits and Top Of The Pops appearances. The Countess of Fife marks a new direction (although she continues to perform regularly with the Rezillos, in UK and abroad) – where she can develop her own writing and explore her wide ranging musical influences while challenging the stereotypes around female musicians and performers.
